DR SHERYLIN THOMPSON

Hello and welcome to my website. My name is Dr Sherylin Thompson and I am a counselling psychologist. I hope that you find what you need to know here to get started with counselling, and please contact me if you have any further questions. I work with individuals and couples and I specialise in a range of therapies to help my clients thrive through a range of life’s challenges.
Life is full of challenges – bringing a range of emotions from triumph to despair. The challenges we face are often about change. We at times crave change and sometimes dread it. Challenges and change can bring fantastic opportunities and they can also bring anxiety, loss and deep uncertainty. Sometimes we long for personal change that will release us from the same old struggles coming up again and again. Sometimes we cling to what is familiar, even if painful, just because it is better than the unknown. Navigating change well means that we don’t just survive it, but that we thrive through it. It is through facing challenges skilfully that we can build resilience.
Counselling, psychology and psychotherapy can help you thrive through the stumbling blocks that you face right now – be they overwhelming or just a niggling worry. Therapy can help you understand the roots of problems that thwart your growth. It is with personal insight that you can learn to thrive.

MY COUNSELLING PRACTICE
Who I work with
I work with adults who seek individual counselling or couples’ therapy. My clients contact me directly or are referred through their GP or health insurance.
What I can help you with
I work with clients facing a range of life’s difficulties. This may be long-term struggles or more recent upsetting events or psychological symptoms. For example, I have experience in anxiety and depression, bereavement, relationship difficulties and trauma.
How I work
I am trained in integrative psychology. This means that I blend approaches and techniques depending on the individual I am working with. I work very collaboratively and I will review our work together regularly.
Individual therapy can help you develop personal insight, understand roots of difficulties, recognise what holds you back and experiment with strategies to move beyond barriers.
Couples’ therapy can help you move through stuck patterns of communication, blocks to intimacy, recovering from infidelity and loss and to find future direction.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a well-respected and evidence based short-term treatment for trauma.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy is a treatment of choice recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) for recurrent depression.
